PHARR, TEXAS - A drug smuggler drove his BMW into an irrigation canal, leading to the arrest of a U.S. citizen and a Mexican national on Tuesday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the incident occurred when Weslaco Station agents saw several suspects loading bundles of narcotics into a vehicle. When agents approached, the driver fled.
Agents chased the BMW until the driver turned onto a dirt road and then crashed into a canal.
Agents surrounded the vehicle and assisted the driver and passenger to safety and placed them under arrest.
The partly submerged vehicle contained four bundles of marijuana, weighing approximately 260 pounds, and six ounces of crack cocaine. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was removed from the canal.
