Austinites shut the door on SXSW with 'Take Back Austin' festivities

'Take Back Austin' event marks end of SXSW

AUSTIN, Texas -- You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.

With SXSW 2017 officially over, Austinites flooded downtown for Sunday Fun Day at the Market, with hopes to take back the city after the week-long festival.

Staffers said it's a way for locals to celebrate another successful ending to the festival: namely because the city won't be overcrowded with tourists anymore.

"It's hard to come downtown to find parking. Traffic is always horrible, and this is a great way to let people know that, 'Hey our city's back to normal, come on down and enjoy the day, come party," said John Hahn, General Manager at The Market.

Even SXSW noticed how visibly clear the traffic is now that the festival is over.

This is the third year the event's been held. The staff said festivities are expected to last through the rest of the evening.
