One dead, one wounded in Air Force plane crash in Del Rio

DEL RIO, TEXAS - One pilot has died and another wounded after an Air Force T-38 Talon crashed around 4 p.m. Monday near Spur 454 and U.S. 90, according to Laughlin Air Force Base.

Laughlin confirmed in a media release that the plane involved is one of its own. Emergency responders and local emergency crews were "on scene to assist in recovery efforts." The wounded pilot has been transferred to Val Verde Regional Medical Center.

Laughlin also said a board of officers will investigate the crash. The base is withholding the names of the pilot until next of kin are notified.

“We are a close knit family, and when a tragedy like this occurs every member of the U.S. Armed Forces feels it. Our people take top priority, and we are committed to ensuring their safety and security," said Col. Michell Pryor, 47th Flying Training Wing vice commander.

A man living near Amistad Lake nearby said the plane hit a a dry area in the brush, and he heard a "loud boom."
