Texans owner Bob McNair recovering from 10-month battle with cancer

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston Texans owner Bob McNair says he's gotten a clean bill of health after a 10-month battle with two forms of cancer.

The 77-year-old McNair spoke about his ordeal at a news conference Thursday attended by his doctors and family members.

McNair says he's dealt with skin cancer for about 20 years and was diagnosed about six years ago with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a blood disease that weakens the immune system.

He had surgery last fall to remove an abnormal growth behind his left ear.

Doctors at the MD Anderson Cancer Center told him that they couldn't remove all the cancerous cells and that McNair had an aggressive form of the disease.

He underwent six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy and CT scans in April and on Monday showed that the cancer cells were virtually gone.

McNair has dealt with skin cancer for around 20 years, but he was more recently diagnosed with a chronic form of lymphoma that lowered his immune system, and made his last bout with skin cancer much more invasive and difficult.

He kept his illness and 10 months of intensive treatments private, using a fake name and slipping in through the back door for his therapies at MD Anderson.
But Thursday that silence was over.

"When you first start treatment, there's room for a lot of speculation of what the end result will be. I didn't want to get a lot of speculation started and we know what the result is now and I'm happy to tell you that it's favorable," McNair said at the afternoon press conference.

"We've got a great group of players and they've all offered me encouragement," the owner added. "They're quite pleased that we got the results we need. I'm there to encourage them. In this case they were encouraging me."

McNair still has the chronic lymphoma. In itself it doesn't have any real symptoms, but it does make him more susceptible to disease, so he's undergoing experimental treatments for that.
