Sunday storms rain out Spring wine and arts festival

The Texas Wine and Art Festival was canceled on Sunday in the Spring and Conroe area after a heavy downpour flooded booths.

SPRING, Texas - Teardown got underway a little early for the Texas Wine and Art Festival in Spring on Sunday after morning storms filled the tents with something besides people.

“We had about two and half inches of rain inside our booth and they canceled the whole venue outright,” says Jacqui Peck, owner of Just Jax Designs.

Jacqui and her husband Darren say they supported organizers’ decision based on the weather that rolled through.

“It was amazing,” Darren says. “You couldn’t see across the street because of how heavy the rain was coming down.”

“The water was up the rims of everybody’s truck,” says Jacqui, gesturing to the vehicles lining Spring’s Gentry Street. “We saw two bolts of lightning hit behind us simultaneously. It did shake the building. It was really bad.”

Though the weather was problematic, the situation could have been much worse for the Pecks, who sell homemade and organic bath bombs.

“Once water hits that, it will explode just like a firework,” explains Darren.

When the rain hit, the couple grabbed what they could from their booth and tried to find temporary shelter at Kudos, a craft store in Old Town Spring. What they ultimately found was a permanent home for Just Jax products.

“They took me on at Kudos,” Jacqui says, standing in front of a new Just Jax display.

Ultimately, what started out as a rainy day wasn’t a complete washout for the Pecks.

As for the Texas Wine and Art Festival, organizers say they have another event planned the first weekend of October.
