Bellaire council discussing controversial shooting
02:59 PM CST on Monday, January 12, 2009
Many graduates from Bellaire have gone on to become big names in the major and minor leagues, say experts.
“We’ve had a bunch of them more than anybody around,” said Bellaire Baseball coach Rocky Manuel.
Robbie Tolan was among the talented young players.
“Robert Tolan was a talented player here at Bellaire High School,” said Manuel.
Records indicate that Tolan went on to play at Prairie View A and M on a championship team. He is now with the Washington Nationals organization.
“The thing that he’ll best be remembered at Bellaire is for being a great guy. That’s what we remember,” said Manuel.

Robbie Tolan was seriously injured when a Bellaire police officer shot him.
But now many Americans know Tolan for what happened at his home in the 800 block of Woodstock New Year’s eve.
Reports indicate that Tolan was shot by a police officer in his parents’ driveway. Tolan, who is a minor league baseball player, was pulled over after police believed the SUV he owned was stolen.
Since the shooting, many people have come forward claiming the City of Bellaire has a history of racial profiling.
City officials previously told 11 News that there had never received a complaint, but reports indicate that is not the case.
In fact, records show that there have been some reports of racial profiling.
The city manager now says there could be more of a problem in his city than he originally thought.
Monday night, city leaders will meet to discuss the controversial shooting.
The special session is reportedly being held in order to figure out what to do if the City of Bellaire is sued.
Tolan is still in the hospital and the officer who shot him is on paid leave.
