Some Galveston residents may get free debris pickup
07:12 PM CST on Friday, January 9, 2009
GALVESTON -- Galveston City officials and FEMA have initiated a Private Property Debris Removal (PPDR) Program to remove storm-damaged materials left behind by Hurricane Ike.
FEMA has approved funding for the removal of hurricane generated debris from eligible private property located within the city limits, only if residents complete an application packet by February 15.
The debris will be picked up free of charge.
To participate, property owners must explain why they are unable to move storm debris to the right-of-way; establish the debris creates a health and safety hazard for the area, not just to the property itself; and provide proof of ownership as well as insurance coverage.
Demolition of privately owned structures determined unsafe will be considered for the program if they meet specific terms and conditions. Commercial, unimproved, and vacant property is not eligible for this program.
Forms and information are available at the following locations:
- The City of Galveston’s Debris Information Center, 4605 Fort Crockett Blvd.
- Online at www.cityofgalveston.org
