05:53 PM CST on Thursday, January 8, 2009
HOUSTON—When Barack Obama is sworn in on January 20, one local school will mark the historic occasion with two honors.
You see, ten days from now, the Imani School’s seven-member jazz band will head to the nation’s capital to entertain. They’ll celebrate the inauguration of a new president, and be a part of history said 7 th grader William Johnson.
“It’s special, to me, because I like being around people, and my fellow band members, we just have fun together, when we play, it’s just a fun time,” he said.
The band was chosen out of thousands in Texas to perform at the Black Tie and Boots Inaugural Ball, one of the premiere parties in Washington. They’ll also play at a Congressional party at Union Station.
The band members are all between 9 and 13-years-old.

Ten days from now, the Imani School's seven-member jazz band will head to the nation's capital to entertain.
They have been practicing long hours, four days a week, at the direction of Leon Mitchison.
Band member Madiana Gullage is excited.
“It’s, like, amazing because I’ve never been to Washington and this is, like, huge,” said the 5th grade student.
The honor of going to Washington only got bigger this week when seventh-grader Falyn Page was tapped to be a keynote speaker.
She’ll introduce either former Vice President Al Gore or former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell at the Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference which occurs days before Inauguration Day.
“That is going to be amazing, like, I can’t wait because when I have children and grandchildren, and they’re reading in their history books, I can be like, I was there, you know, when he was President,” said Falyn.
