Houston rapper releases album from prison
04:58 PM CST on Saturday, November 29, 2008
PALESTINE, Texas – There was a time when South Park Mexican was a rapper who on the verge of national fame. But now the rapper, who’s name is Carlos Coy, passes his time in a state prison.
Coy has served six out of his 45 year sentence for the aggravated sexual assault of a child.
“Do you know what it is like to kiss your babies through a window, and see your whole life pass through a window?” said Coy.
Coy claimed that he was innocent of molesting his daughter's 9-year-old friend. However, paternity tests did prove that he fathered a child with a 14-year-old girl in a separate case.
“They say all publicity is good publicity, but not in this case,” said Coy.
In 2006, Coy was back in the Harris County Jail appealing his sentence. While there, Coy said he secretly recorded several songs from a payphone, with the help of other inmates.
“They used plastic bags, but somehow they made a thick string out of it that's real hard. Then, they tied it from staircases to the showers. They had all these wool blankets and built me a soundproof vocal booth,” said Coy.
At first, Dopehouse Records said some songs on Coy’s new album would be jailhouse recordings. The rest of them would be from before South Park Mexican went to prison. But now, Dopehouse won’t say if any of the jailhouse songs will be released.
Wherever the material was recorded, it will be on sale in a few days. But while this is a happy occasion for South Park and his fans, his victim, who is now 16, is dreading the release.
“They [her friends and fellow students] will listen to that music and somehow bring it up and mention it,” said the victim's mother.
There are law prohibiting criminals from profiting from their crimes while behind bars, but Coy said he isn’t paid for his music. His brother Authur owns Dopehouse Records, where Coy’s wife and family members work.
When pressed about his finances, South Park Mexican claimed that his last CD actually lost money, and any profits are not in his name.
“We made $1.1 million on last CD, but we spent $1.2 million,” said Coy.
But the victim's family does not care about the money. They were once close friends with the Coys, and they said what they really want is a sincere apology.
