Mom says her son was injured at a Pasadena day care facility
11:01 AM CST on Thursday, November 20, 2008
HOUSTON -- It’s been a rough month for Trey Salazar.
He’s only 2 years old, but he was old enough to let his mom know he was scared to leave the house in the morning.
“At first I thought he was just anxious going to day care, but he was actually scared and getting hurt,” Trey’s mom, Chrissy Salazar, said.
The latest incident upset Salazar so much, she called CPS.
“I went in the classroom to get him, and he was screaming, crying and he was shaking. He looked up at me and he had a black eye,” Salazar said.
A few days later, she took pictures of her son to document the injuries.
So, what happened?
“No explanation. The assistant director had no explanation. She said the director would call me, but the director never called me,” Salazar said.
Trey told his aunt and mom that the day care teacher went “boom boom.”
The black eye incident, and another one two weeks earlier involving a slap to the head, allegedly happened at RedBluff Kids, Inc., in Pasadena.
When 11 News first contacted the owner, she said the incidents were investigated and determined to be unfounded.
But CPS said that’s not true, and the investigations are ongoing.
Salazar said when she talked with a child care licensing investigator, the state told her they had found other parents who were concerned about RedBluff Kids, Inc.
But instead of reporting it, those parents just started taking their kids to another day care.
Salazar believes if they had reported it, her son could have been spared some pain.
“This wouldn’t have happened, and he wouldn’t have gotten hurt,” she said.
CPS said parents who think something might be happening to a child in a day care facility are obligated by law to call the authorities.
“Talk to your kids. I always talk to my son,” Salazar said.
For the Salazars, that communication paid off.
Now, Salazar said Trey is not scared when he leaves his house in the morning.
