Shifting political landscape drives up gun sales in Houston
03:02 PM CST on Monday, November 17, 2008
HOUSTON -- A shifting political landscape in Washington is packing gun shows, including the one in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Over 10,000 people showed up on Saturday, and just as many turned out on Sunday.
"I believe people are in fear of not being able to purchase firearms in the future. They believe that a Democratic president and legislature will outlaw guns," said Todd Bean from the High Caliber Gun & Knife Show.
President-elect Barack Obama has publicly supported the rights of Americans to bear arms with what he calls "reasonable" restrictions.
But the fear of what could happen is so big, gun show sales have doubled and in some cases tripled since Election Day.

The biggest sellers are assault rifles.
"Every election year you have an increase in sales because you don't know what the new administration will be like; it's just a precaution," said T.C. Morrow, gun owner.
While some claim it’s fear that is increasing gun sales, others don't buy the hype.
"A lot of it is hype. Because as gun owners, being in the NRA, we hope that Obama will lead from the center and not trample on the Second Amendment right," said Rhett Boren, gun owner.
A mid-summer U.S. Supreme Court decision re-affirmed the Second Amendment, with justices five to four ruling Americans have a right to own guns for hunting and self defense.
Still, the uncertainty remains.
"Things change. The Supreme Court can change with new appointees by a Democratic president. And then, we'll be back to square one," said Bean.
As long fear is in the air, gun shows expect sales to continue to shoot through the roof.
