Yom Kippur beings at sundown
02:16 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Yom Kippur, or day of atonement, begins tonight at sundown.
This is what is known as the most “solemn day” in the Jewish calendar.
It concludes the 10 days of repentance that begin with Rosh Hashanah.
The idea is to have the individual purify themselves by forgiving the sins of others and by repenting one’s own sins against God.
Tonight, Jews all over the world will say prayers and ask for forgiveness.
It is typical to fast from sundown tonight to sundown tomorrow.
