Victim's father preaches patience in sermon
07:17 PM CDT on Sunday, September 7, 2008
HOUSTON -- In a small church on the northeast side of Houston, the celebration and song were followed by a sermon on patience.
In 2003, the pastor's son, 16-year-old Raymond Jr., and an eight-year-old girl died when her house caught fire.
Now five years later, church members David and Sharon Watkins, the girl's parents, are charged with murder after they allegedly set their own house on fire to collect the insurance money.
"They are responsible for taking two lives. They need to be punished for that crucial deed that they have done," said Reverend Raymond Lee Farley, victim’s father.
In his sermon on Sunday, Reverend Farley talked about forgiveness. He read a passage from Exodus about waiting years and years for deliverance for justice, and said his family's justice took five years to come.
David and Sharon Watkins are expected back in court in the next few weeks.
They were arrested last week after a Harris County grand jury indicted them in August. Attorneys for each say the husband and wife are innocent of the charges.
