HOUSTON -- With higher costs for fuel and other expenses, several school districts are scrambling to raise extra cash.  One way Katy schools are covering their cost is by raising the price of football tickets.

"It's just a reality of the times we live in. We look at inflation across the board for everything. It's just a sign of the times," said Steve Stanford, Katy ISD Assistant Communications Director.

For the fall 2008 season, the price of a varsity game has more than doubled. Ticket holders will pay $10 per ticket per game, which is up from $4 a year ago.  But those who purchase tickets at the gate will have to pay $12–-a $7 increase from last year’s $5 fee.

"It's a big increase. But I tell you what; I enjoy going to the games and I believe a lot of people in Katy support this team," said Kenny Sumrall, who is president of Katy High School’s Booster Club.

The district said rising fuel costs and a UIL mandate to pay referees more money are the main reasons behind the increase.

Katy is not the only school district struggling with inflation. Many other school districts have been forced to cut corners to make their budgets.

Some have eliminated positions, while others have increased class sizes. One district, Humble ISD, has agreed to allow advertisements on the side of school buses to generate revenue. They will be the first public school in metro Houston and the second state-wide to pursue additional revenues through school bus advertising.

In Katy, the money from the higher ticket prices will go into the operating fund. However, some of the parents, who now have to pay the extra money to watch their child play football, believe the increase should not have come all at once.

"They are probably long overdue because it's been 20 years. To double the prices is little to steep. I think they probably ought to review that every year," said Kevin Tatum, Katy ISD parent.

However, when it comes to Friday night football, some are more than willing to pay the price.
