CLEVELAND, Texas – Cleveland High School theatre teacher and student council sponsor Laurie Anne Lewis was arrested Tuesday on charges of prostitution in downtown Houston.

According to the Houston Police Department, 38-year-old Lewis was arrested in an ongoing undercover operation. 

Since Lewis' arrest was part of a continuing investigation, the offense report regarding her arrest has not been made public. But Kerry Cowart, the superintendent of Cleveland ISD, said he spoke to Lewis on Friday afternoon and confirmed the allegations.

Cowart said when he asked if she was arrested for prostitution, Lewis admitted it was true.

Lewis was immediately placed on paid administrative leave pending resolution of the charges.

One teen on the student council described Lewis as an excellent teacher and said the news surprised everyone. 

"She was role model to me and I really didn't expect her to do that because she was always one to us. I just thought that she would be different," said Kala Patton, a junior at Cleveland High School.

The parents of the school were also shocked.

"They [the students] are already influenced by some of the younger teachers, and to have something like that...that's not right," said Susan Swearingen, parent.

In the meantime, Lewis posted a $500 bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned in Harris County Criminal Court 2 on August 20.

Lewis had been teaching at Cleveland High School since August 2006. In addition to teaching theatre and sponsoring the student council, Lewis was also the sponsor for Cleveland High School's One-Act Play competition.

On August 25, the Cleveland ISD school board will decide on her status with the district.
