Residents, business owners: Abandoned condos destroying neighborhood

HOUSTON -- A coalition of residents and business owners from Houston's near northwest side will be converging on city hall on Tuesday.  They claim that two large abandoned condominium complexes are destroying their neighborhood.

One of the complexes, the Candlewood Glenn Condominiums is mostly abandoned. The complex appears seemingly forgotten, like the few remaining residents that still live there.

Roy Millmore, of the Near Northwest Management District, said the area surrounding the condominiums is dangerous.  When asked what goes on at night, he said:

“You might see some children running from us once they spot us, who have been involved in sexual activity…not to mention narcotics trafficking.”

One resident of the rundown complex said he has lived there for two months.  Although he said he pays $550 a month in rent, that’s not true for everyone.

“The biggest majority of them are squatters.  Certainly the occupancy rate here is supposed to be nothing,” said Millmore.

The same situation is happening at the Candlewood Trails complex just down the street.

“It’s been about a year since the city ordered residents to vacate, and yet here it stands over a year later,” said Millmore.

The management district and some neighbors want the city to tear both complexes down.

“Squatters, crack heads and drug dealers. They need to shut the apartments down,” said Leticia Lindsay, neighbor.

A sign posted at the entrance to the complex would suggest there were plans to reopen the buildings under a new name.  They would be called Palm Terrace, and phase one was scheduled for construction during the summer of 2008. But it’s now August, and there is no sign of construction.

The company that owns the property said it's been working diligently with investors to bring about a renovation. It hopes to eventually make the area a private street, complete with a guard shack.
