Controversial Kirby tree removal under way
11:22 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 29, 2008
HOUSTON -- Kirby will be looking a little different Tuesday.
Overnight, crews cut down dozens of trees lining Kirby between Richmond and Westheimer as part of a controversial construction project.
Though many Houstonians opposed the plan, the city maintained it needed to expand the street.
Trees for Houston, a volunteer organization, took action against the proposal.
They marked the 124 trees slated for removal with a red X to get the word out about the city’s plan.
But despite their efforts, that plan became a reality while the city slept Tuesday.
About eight of the 124 trees will be left untouched once the removals are completed.
The city said it will add more trees along the street once the expansion project is finished.
