Many Heights residents without water
01:38 AM CDT on Friday, July 25, 2008
HOUSTON -- Many residents in the Heights were without water Thursday night and likely though Friday morning after a water main break. The waterline broke Thursday afternoon and created a sinkhole on Oxford at 6 ½ Street.
Not long after, a garbage truck struck the sinkhole, rupturing the truck’s oil pan and spilling oil all over the road. Because a hazardous materials team had to be called to clean up the oil, repairs on the sinkhole were delayed.
The sinkhole was nearly 10 feet deep and crews were expected to work all night to fix it.
About 50 customers will be without water until the mess is cleaned up.
Some residents complained that they reported the broken water main early Thursday morning, but no one responded to fix it until it was too late.
