U.S. Army Spc. Sergio Trejo, who was wounded in Iraq, and his wife, Jessica, are getting a new home through HelpingAHero.org. In 2006, a bomb exploded near Trejo's Humvee. He suffered a brain injury and a broken back.
Spc. Sergio Trejo, 25, joined state and local officials Wednesday in the Delany Cove subdivision at the site of his future home to be built from donations from Friendswood Development Co., Meritage Homes, the Houston Rotary district and the Helping A Hero organization.
In August 2006, a roadside bomb exploded near Trejo’s Humvee, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury and a broken back. Jessica Trejo said her husband’s recovery has progressed in 23 months.
The couple and their two children, Trinity, 2, and David, 1, will soon move into a two-story, 2,850-square-foot home after qualifying for the Helping A Hero program and securing a $50,000 bank loan.
“It’s unreal, and we’re very grateful for everybody’s help,” Trejo said. “Helping A Hero has changed my family’s life forever.”
Meredith Iler, a Helping A Hero board member, said military veterans suffering a minimum 30 percent permanent disability can qualify for the new home program, but most of the recipients are 80 percent or more disabled.
“Sergio suffered a broken back and was given last rights three times in Iraq,” Iler said. “He’ll have a $300 mortgage, which is manageable for him, and he still provides for his family.”
State Rep. Larry Taylor, state Sen. Mike Jackson and Bill Charbonneau, mayor pro tem of La Marque, thanked Trejo for his military service. Trejo then grabbed a shovel and helped break ground on his new home, scheduled for completion in November.
Trejo, a Chicago native, moved to Pasadena with his family, where he graduated high school and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was medically discharged after his injury.
During two tours in Iraq, Trejo earned a Purple Heart and other decorations.
