Tropical Storm Dolly could become a hurricane
06:28 PM CDT on Sunday, July 20, 2008
HOUSTON -- Tropical Storm Dolly has formed in the western Caribbean, but 11 News meteorologist Mario Gomez says even if Dolly becomes a hurricane quickly, it’s still unclear if it will strike anywhere in Texas.
“Dolly could become a hurricane sometime on Monday out in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Gomez. “But the Yucatan Peninsula could prove to be a challenge for it.”
Gomez says that as storms cross over the peninsula, they generally weaken. If they do emerge across the western end towards the gulf, that’s when we may have to worry.
“The water is extremely warm this time of year and this could mean Dolly could become a hurricane,” said Gomez.
The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning Sunday for the Yucatan Peninsula from the Border of Campeche, Mexico. The storm is currently moving toward the northwest at 17 mph.
Dolly is the fourth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30.
