Houston turns red, white and blue
11:06 AM CDT on Saturday, July 5, 2008
HOUSTON -- The Fourth of July holiday looked as if it was going to be a washout when the day began Friday. By late afternoon, however, the skies had cleared just in time for one of the largest fireworks displays ever in the city of Houston.
More than 100,000 people were estimated to have packed Eleanor Tinsley Park near downtown for the festivities. The city’s annual Freedom Over Texas celebration boasts as being the largest land-based fireworks display in the country.
The big crowds meant that the Baines family’s concession stand was serving up plenty of food.

“Anytime people can come out and have a good time I think it’s wonderful,” said food stand operator Jodie Baines.
And it was wonderful for those who came out for the celebration.
“It’s always important to celebrate the birth of your nation,” said Austin resident Justin Jones. “You have got to have some American pride.”
It was the kind of pride that shines through in red, white and blue.
“Fourth of July is an American holiday. And we are Americans (and) we are celebrating here,” said Air Force retiree Hector Panalez, who brought his family out for the activities. “I am a veteran. Fourth of July means independence. I believe in Memorial Day and I believe in the Forth of July.”
It was a belief carried by many on Friday, as patriotism was on display as bright as the fireworks that lit up the Houston skyline.
