DAISETTA, Texas -- As the dog days of summer set in over Daisetta and kids pedal across the familiar terrain of their street, parents are keeping a wary eye on the place where the lay of the land forever changed their town.

It was a sinkhole – and a big one, at that.

In the tiny town of 1,100, everyone wonders what their future with the sinkhole holds.

“Just what it’s exactly doing, if it’ll grow any bigger of if it’s going to have any impact on the town itself,” Daisetta resident Sherry Goodman said.

Experts shed some light on those questions Tuesday night at a community meeting.

Geologist Mark Kasmarek was one of those experts who spoke.

He and others plan to pool their information and figure out what will happen in Daisetta.

Right now, there are more cracks in the ground near the sinkhole, and a new area recently fell almost two feet.

But that’s not cause for panic, Kasmarek said.

“As long as we don’t have any other caverns, any subsurface for this, it will not get worse,” he said.

Townspeople aren’t completely convinced.

“People are seeing places in the yards sinking, cracks, creating a lot of concern because as of right now, they don’t know how stable it is,” Mayor Lynn Wells said.

A series of monitors have been placed across the town to keep track of the ground’s stability.

The county would like to make those monitors a permanent fixture.

They say they want to know what’s happening with the sinkhole ahead of time in case they need to evacuate.
