HOUSTON -- It was terrifying enough in March when a home in the 6600 block of Winfield went up in flames.

“Oh yes, (the flames) were up there and scary too,” said Annie Shephard, who lives five doors down from the home that burned.

But the fear of that night is compounded by the fact that the nearest fire hydrant to the neighborhood is a quarter of a mile away.

“That’s why I’ve been making all these calls trying to get some answers as to why there’s not a fire hydrant in this area,” said Shephard.

She’s kept notes of every call, but so far no answer and little response from the city.

Shephard said she fears not just for her neighbors and her own home, she and some neighbors are also concerned for the entire community, including the middle school across the street.

“They are always having fire dills and things like that. So what actually happens if there is actually (a fire)? That would be sad,” said resident Myeeshi McDonald.

The neighborhood was annexed into the city limits just a few years ago and that the city is aware of the fire danger.

“We are actually putting together a study to give us an accurate idea of what we need to do to resolve some of those concerns,” said Houston Public Works spokesman Alvin Wright.

Shephard hopes that study doesn’t take log to bring results.

“At this time in our lives, we don’t need to be worrying about things like this,” she said.
