HOUSTON—Close to 4,500 flags were placed in Hermann Park in memory of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan Sunday.

The display was sponsored by Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War, among others.

The flags were placed in order by date of death. They include the name, hometown and how each serviceperson died.

Each name was read out loud, but sponsors said it was not meant to be a political or anti-war statement.

They insisted they were there only to honor the war dead.

“This is what Memorial Day is all about. We commemorate those who have given their lives in service to their country and we want the citizens of Houston to see the sacrifices that have been made by those people who have given their lives in service to their country,” Mary of the Greater Heights Democratic Club said.

The display will be at the park through Monday.

If you visit and you need to find a particular person’s flag, a volunteer will lead you to it.
