HOUSTON—He introduced President George W. Bush at the 2000 Republican National Convention, he was there at both of the president’s inaugurations, and Sunday, he presided over the First Daughter’s wedding.
Houston Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell said he was taken by surprise when Jenna Bush called him.
“I was shocked, absolutely shocked. She called. She said, ‘I’m getting married. I’d like for you to perform the ceremony.’ I said, ‘OK, I can do that!’” Caldwell said.
The couple got married in front of a cross made of Texas limestone at the Bush family’s Crawford ranch.
Pastor Caldwell performed the 35-minute ceremony, which the couple had gone to great lengths to keep private.
“If you did not know it was the daughter of the president getting married, you would not know it by being there,” Caldwell said.
About 200 guests watched Henry Hager and Jenna Bush exchange vows.
As for the president, Caldwell said, on Saturday he was just the father of the bride.
“He was compassionate and emotional. He cried a couple of times,” Caldwell said.
But there was also a lot of laughter.
The tented reception at the Western White House lasted until 1 a.m.
“Food was good, party was great. The band was from Nashville, Tennessee. It was fabulous,” Caldwell said.
Jenna’s Oscar de la Renta gown also got high marks from the pastor, though he admits he’s no fashion expert.
“The most important thing I can tell you about the dress… She wore the dress. The dress did not wear her,” Caldwell said.
The pastor described the newlyweds as gracious and transparent.
The wedding was not about politics or policy, Caldwell said. It was about Jenna Bush and Henry Hager.
