HOUSTON—J’anvieu Bonner worked hard in the classroom for five years and made good grades, but she was told Monday that she can’t graduate from the University of Houston Downtown.

With the ceremony less than two weeks away, Bonner found out her name had mistakenly been left off the commencement list.

She sought help from an administrator.

“She said, ‘we’ll work on having you in the commencement ceremony, but as far as the program, you won’t be in it,’” Bonner recalled.

And meant no public acknowledgement and no walk across the stage to receive her diploma.

“I cried,” Bonner said.

But she also contacted 11 News.

Bonner said all the pomp and circumstance means so much because her parents are both U of H alums, and her grandparents never got the chance to go to college.

“The struggle that they went through to get me to the point where I’m at, and I won’t be recognized … It really hurts,” she said.

The situation seemed bleak at best, at least until 11 News called U of H officials to get their take on the predicament.

Not long after our questions, a university spokesperson arrived to say the problem had been solved.

“And I’ve just apologized to her for any inconvenience or misunderstanding she may have encountered,” U of H spokeswoman Sue Davis said.

Davis blamed the ordeal on a computer error.

And now Bonner can get on with graduating.

“I’m so happy. I’m so happy,” she said.
