Klein ISD voters to decide $647 million bond issue for new schools

NORTHWEST HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- At Benignus Elementary School in the Klein school district, when it rains, third graders have class on the floor.
"We have all 3rd grade students in the portables (buildings). When it's lighting, (we) bring them in for safety issues,” said school Principal Misty Kainer.
Constant growth has left Klein ISD needing more space. Supporters say a bond proposal would relieve overcrowding by building five new schools.
The price tag of the bond proposal? $647 million dollars.
"It is a figure we will be able to bear as far as taxes are concerned,” insists parent and bond supporter Margaret Chiavonne. “I wish we could have done $800 million, because it is that much of a need."
However, a group opposing the bond claims the money would be allocated in the wrong places.
"We know we need to build schools. Here's where we are different, we need to build six or seven elementary schools, not three,” said bond opponent Rich Talaber.
It has been a heated debate. Both sides accusing each other of voter intimidation.
The area chamber of commerce even wrote a letter saying businesses should post campaign signs without fear or consequence.
The common goal is giving students the space they need to learn. Now voters in Klein ISD must decide how much they are willing to pay.
