Blaze leaves 8 families homeless

HOUSTON -- Firefighters had their hands full Friday with a fast-burning apartment fire in Southwest Houston.
The fire started in an upstairs unit and the flames spread quickly through a common attic of the Coral Gables apartments in the 10500 block of Beechnut near Maplecrest.
Several Houston fire trucks rushed to the scene to battle the blaze.
But it was too late to save the building. All eight units were a total loss.
For one resident, it was an all too familiar scene. Giovanni Banks said she lost everything in another fire three weeks ago.
"If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any at all," Banks said. "I'm still, as you can see, in a state of shock so I'm just dealing with it as it comes."
There were no injuries, according to HFD Assistant Chief Tommy Dowdy.
One firefighter was taken to an area hospital with chest pains.
From Air 11, residents could be seen running through the complex as thick smoke filled the sky above them.
The investigation into the cause of the fire will begin once it's under control.
