Ex-congressman surrenders on aggravated assault charge
01:16 PM CDT on Saturday, April 26, 2008
HOUSTON -- Former U.S. Congressman Craig Washington spoke out Friday for the first time since he allegedly fired a gun at a couple of teenagers.
Washington was indicted this week on one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He turned himself in overnight, paid his bond and went home.
Later, Washington stood outside the county courthouse surrounded by supporters, including several fellow attorneys.
The former congressman said he has faith that the justice system will work when his case goes to trial.
"I've been telling people for 38 years that the system works," Washington said. "I've been telling them that because I believe the system works and I'll stand trial in this courthouse because I know the system works."
The longtime defense attorney said it's been an eye-opening experience despite nearly four decades of experience with the legal system.
"You don't know what it's like to be fingerprinted and photographed, now I have," said Washington.
Washington was indicted for allegedly firing a gun at a car carrying two 18-year-old males. It was New Year's Eve and the teens' car was in the parking lot of Washington's law offices.
Washington said they were trespassing. The teens argued they were just passing through to go to a nightclub.
Washington avoided specific questions about the case on Friday.
If convicted, Washington could face 20 years in prison.
