Emilio arrives at TIRR

HOUSTON -- Emilio Navaira’s wife, Maria, says her husband’s songs about unconditional love helped her keep faith in his recovery.

A week ago, that faith paid off.

Doctors said the singer was out of danger and moved him out of the intensive care unit at Memorial Hermann.

On Wednesday, things got even better.

Emilio was moved to Memorial Hermann TIRR for rehabilitiation.

11 News was there when his team of nurses covered him with sheets and rolled him in for the therapy phase of his recovery.

“Although he still has a long way to go in his recovery, this is certainly a major milestone, and it is very encouraging for him and his family,” said Dr. Alex Valadka.

Dr. Valadka has been treating Emilio since the accident.

Emilio Navaira has been in the hospital since his tour bus crashed in Bellaire early Easter morning.

“Just the fact that he has been bedridden for so long, making sure that he has strength in the arms and legs,” Valadka said.

Emilio will undergo physical therapy to help him regain strength at TIRR, but doctors say his biggest challenge by far will be speech therapy.

That’s because the injuries Navaira suffered are in the area of the brain that controls speech.

But even though Emilio can’t sing his famous love songs just yet, Maria says she can see that love in his eyes.
