Homes, cars and even parks are going green.

Watch Rosa Flores' 11 News report.

The signs have been green for years at one store and now the hardware sold inside the New Living store is also going green.

“We are basically taking this community hardware story and transitioning it to a green general store,” said New Living’s Jeff Kaplan.

Meaning, all the merchandise inside the store is billed as eco-friendly

This store, like many others, are going green.

Tiffan Wong is the store’s co-owner.

“We do a lot of research on our products. We make sure that everything that goes into the product is either organic or eco friendly or naturally based,” she said.

The Federal Trade Commission oversees so called green products.

It even has a list of green guidelines, but those guidelines are ten years old.

That’s why some businesses that claim to be green, like the Green Hotels Association, have their own green guide.

Patricia Griffin is with the association. “We have to look at the particular product and see what it is. If its signage we look for reduced energy usage and in the case of the manufacture that it creates less waste.”

The FTC plans to update it’s green guide at the end of this month.

Until then, experts warn consumers should read package details so that they won’t be deceived.

The owners of New Living say they read the fine print for Houston consumers.

They say that soon every product inside their hardware store will be billed as green.

And going green is easier than you think; there are many tips available for those who plan to do so.
