Sugar Land coed sues UT, claims she didn't get in because she's white

HOUSTON—Getting into college is a stressful process for any student.
In Texas, high school seniors who finish in the top 10 percent of their class are guaranteed admission to any state university.
But a senior from Sugar Land who landed in the top 12 percent is suing the University of Texas, claiming she didn’t get in because she is white.
“This lawsuit aims to stop the University of Texas from using race as a consideration in its admission process,” Edward Blum, director of the Project on Fair Representation said.
Abigail Fisher, 18, is a senior at Stephen F. Austin High School. The lawsuit was filed on her behalf by Blum's organization.
Blum said Fisher is not talking publicly. But her lawsuit alleges UT’s admission policy violates discrimination laws.
Officials from the University of Texas responded to the lawsuit in a statement, saying the school’s undergrad admissions policy is well-administered, and that the university complies with all applicable laws.
An admissions counselor at the University of Houston said each public university has to have its own criteria for admitting students who fall outside the top 10 percent.
U of H students had mixed feelings about race as a factor in college admission.
“I think institutions have to begin to ask that question, where are we falling behind. It may be diversity for some,” Jeff Fuller said.
“It should play a small roll, but it shouldn’t be the only roll,” senior Nate Post said.
“If you have that top 10 percent rule, then I don’t think race should have any merit at all,” senior Anuj Kapur said.
It’s a tough call that now may be settled in a court of law.
