Obama-Hillary contest drives voters to the polls
11:37 AM CST on Thursday, February 21, 2008
It’s a race that’s driving people to the polls: Barack Obama vs. Hillary Clinton.
“This is truly a battleground state, particularly in the Democratic primary,” Beverly Kauffman said.
So far, more than 19,000 Democrats have voted early in Harris County. That's more than 10 times higher than this point four years ago.
As for Republicans, 8,600 of them voted in the first two days of early voting. That's four times the turnout in 2004.
“The non-competitive nature of the Republican side – not that Huckabee isn’t running – probably will drive a lot more Democratic voters to the Democratic primary,” 11 News political expert Bob Stein said.
Pockets of the Houston area supported different candidates. In Acres Homes there was a large turnout of Obama supporters.
In Moody Park, Clinton supporters were abundant.
Even though turnout here is extremely high, it's still among the lowest in the state.
Statewide, Harris County ranks 14th in the top 15 counties in terms of Democratic turnout.
Only Montgomery County is lower.
For Republicans, Harris County is the fourth lowest.
But Republican turnout in Fort Bend and Montgomery Counties is the highest in the state.
Some voters chose instead to shatter the stereotypes and follow their hearts.
“I voted Republican because it’s the closest thing it would have been to Ron Paul,” Charic Daniels said.
