10:31 AM CST on Tuesday, February 19, 2008
Houston Texans wide receiver Jerome Mathis was arrested Feb. 17 for allegedly assaulting his pregnant common law wife.
According to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department, 911 dispatch received a hang-up call from Mathis’ residence the evening of Feb. 15.
When dispatchers called the number back, Mathis’ common law wife, Erica Smith, answered and advised them she had been assaulted by her husband.
She is six months pregnant.

Smith said Mathis had come home intoxicated and angry because he couldn’t find his cell phone charger. When she handed it to him, she said he pushed her onto the bed and started choking her with his hands around her neck.
Smith said when she told Mathis she was going to call the police, he left their residence.
When deputies arrived at the home, they observed a red mark on Smith’s neck. She refused to be treated by EMS. Patrol officers searched the area for Mathis but were unable to find him.
On Feb. 17, deputies obtained a warrant for Mathis’ arrest and took him into custody without incident.
If convicted, Mathis could face a fine of up to $4,000 and a year in jail.
It wasn’t the Texans player’s first run-in with the law. He was ticketed in December for allegedly letting his pit bull run loose in his neighborhood.
