Targeting strip clubs an ongoing battle for HPD Vice

HOUSTON -- The force of a federal ruling is being used by Houston police to shut down strip clubs.

The latest on their list? Solid Platinum Club.

HPD learned the club was operating without a sexually oriented business license.

For the second time in two weeks, detectives from HPD’s Vice Division paid a visit to the topless bar on West T.C. Jester near the North Loop.

Police made several arrests.

Four dancers were taken into custody and charged with a half dozen violations that included lewd dancing and not having their licenses properly displayed.

The manager, Kevin Thompson, was also arrested for operating an unlicensed sexually oriented business.

He was forced to shut the club down.

When Thompson was first questioned inside, police said they found several baggies of powder cocaine on him.

Thompson was also charged for possession of the illegal drugs.

Ever since a federal court ruled in favor of the city, giving it the OK to enforce the sexually oriented business ordinance that’s been on the books since 1997, HPD Vice has been on the move.

Officers have conducted raids at several sexually oriented businesses in Houston, and they say more will follow.

Most of the businesses are located close to schools, churches and parks.

Police say, the way the ordinance is written, many clubs like Solid Platinum will be forced to close their doors.

But the orders to close don’t always last long.

Solid Platinum was open again for business Wednesday night.
