Home-school basketball team making the grade
11:30 AM CST on Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Most high school athletes compete on teams where they go to school, but what about teams who are home-schooled?
Well the Homeschool Christian Youth Association ( HCYA) created a basketball team of their own. But one thing is missing. They never play any home games.
“No we don’t have any home games .We always go to their gym to play,” HCYA guard Oscar Guerrero said.
The team practices in a renovated baseball facility at the Houston Volleyball Training Center on West Houston.
“This floor, when we first got in here, I didn’t know how we’d do it. There are no side goals here. Did you notice that?,” HCYA head coach Tom Sanders said. “But we’ve taken a weakness and made it a strength and we just started running and it’s become a real strength.”
The HCYA basketball team is now one of the best high school basketball teams in the city!
“At the beginning of the year nobody even knew who we were,” said HCYA forward John Paul Cavanaugh.
But after knocking off two of the top teams in the Houston area, Klein Forest and Cy Springs, everyone on the high school scene knows about the HCYA team.
“We play fast, we play hard and we play as a team,” Cavanaugh said.

There are many unique aspects of this home-school program, but one of the most unique of all is the floor these guys practice on everyday. It is the exact floor that UH played UCLA on back in the Astrodome in the late 60’s.
“In fact if you look at it, it’s hand painted .You can even see the drips on the floor,” Sanders said.
And with its best team ever, HCYA is making a little history of its own. The team’s top player, point guard Jesse Sanders, just committed to play at Rice.
