Maher Kahn is in the business of making people look good. But the owner of the Quick Change Beauty Salon has run into a blemish that doesn't have an easy fix.

"I look around and I am just scared,” said Kahn.

The salon owner works in what the Houston Police Department considers its Westside Division.

11 News obtained an internal HPD officer and civilian staffing report. It reveals the Westside Division has the largest number of vacancies. It’s down 70 police officers.

Department wide, HPD has 4,855 officers. That number is down 534 officers throughout the city.

"Bottom line is, we can’t hire fast enough,” said Houston City Councilman Adrian Garcia.

He joined others at Houston City Hall Tuesday responding to Monday's 11 News report.

“Despite what we do (to) fill the ranks, we know we are below the status quo,” said Councilwoman Pat Holm.

Assistant Police Chief Charles McClelland authored the report. He wouldn't speak with us on camera, but said off camera, these weekly reports can vary.

A police spokesperson told 11 News the Westside Division is one of the largest divisions in the city and that's why there are a larger number of vacancies there.

Still, Kahn would like to see those vacancies disappear. Because of what can sometimes be an ugly side outside her beauty business.

“I would love it. I would love it,” she said. “I would feel more secure of course.”
