Texas City asks TxDOT to rethink deadly highway
12:18 AM CST on Friday, January 11, 2008
The images from a single photo are just a glimpse into a much bigger story. A picture of two mangled cars from a head on collision. Two people were killed.
That from a single photo taken Tuesday, but an image taken too many times on one stretch of road in Texas City.
Patrol Sgt. Bill Goodwin stood with us along the highway. Took us past several roadside crosses and memorials in just a few miles drive.
Then he stood with us where that single photo was taken Tuesday night.
“We stay very busy here,” the veteran Texas City cop said.
Busy, may be an understatement.
Of the 12 fatal traffic accidents in Texas City last year, five were on State Highway 146.
And the year 2008 starts with two more dead.
“Is it frustrating we have to work these type of incidents? Yes it is,” said Goodwin.
“You look back and you say, we might have a problem here,” Texas City’s police Chief Robert Burby said.
Burby says a combination of problems has made a stretch of 146 deadly.
A busy state highway with heavy traffic to and from Texas City refineries combined with drivers going too fast.
And maybe it is a road that needs to be redesigned. A new bridge was built two years ago to cut down on accidents at the 25th Street intersection.
Tuesday's fatal accident happened at the north end approach to that bridge.
“We have made a second request to (the Texas Department of Transportation) to come back and look at the design of the road and maybe alleviate some of the problems we've been having with the accidents,” said Burby.
In the meantime, Texas City police have added more patrols to the highway. The chief is also asking drivers to slow down and be more careful in order to keep the highway from claming another life.
