Cedar trees spewing pollen, fueling allergies
10:11 AM CST on Thursday, January 3, 2008
The New Year could trigger new allergies.
“The runny nose. I usually lose my voice for about a week and the coughing and stuffiness and the itchy eyes, I get a little bit of everything,” said Heather Stelling, cedar sufferer.
Thanks to cedar trees, which are actually ashe-juniper trees, cedar fever will leave you feeling like you have the flu, but without the actual fever.
"When cedar goes crazy in Central Texas, it doesn't get any worse than this,” said Dr. William Charles Howland III, M.D., of the Allergy and Asthma Center of Austin.
The highest cedar counts are in the first and second week of January. The dry, cool weather spreads pollen in the air, and then into your eyes and nose.
“It's a real pain in the neck when you have allergies,” said cedar sufferer, Josh Stelling, 9.
“(It bothers me) especially on windy days when all the cedar's blowing around. So it really makes your eyes itch,” said cedar sufferer, Austin Stelling, 11.
“We are in the peak of cedar fever right now,” said Ilona Torok, meteorologist.
Torok counts pollen every morning. Over the holidays cedar pollen hit extreme highs.
“We have an abundance of cedar trees here in Central Texas. Anybody who's lived here awhile will know that that is primarily the type of tree that we see here,” said Torok.
“There's no escaping the cedar pollen. The counts are so high, that even if you're outdoors for just a few minutes you get enough exposure to get lots of symptoms,” said Dr. Howland.
The tiny brown cones on the cedar trees trigger the symptoms. When the winds pick up and the weather's dry, they spread.
“You feel a little dread when you know that cedar's coming, but I try to stay away from the trees, but you go outside and the cedar hits,” said Camille Minor, cedar sufferer.
Allergists are testing medications that could alleviate cedar fever pains but it could take two years before the medicines are available.
