Metro bus riders learning the 'Q' lingo

The multiple fare cards will be replaced by the Q-card.

The lingo at metro bus stops is changing. Soon, gone will be the use of fare cards to get from Point A to Point B.

Come March, there will be only two ways to pay for a bus ride. Of course, they will still accept cash, but the fare cards will be replaced by the Q-card.

“I had been using cash (and) back in the day, tokens,” said bus rider Susan Bradford. “So, (this) just brings me up to the present.”

Until now, there were actually 65 different ways to pay for a bus fare. All the combination of fare cards and transfer slips made it confusing for bus riders as well as bus drivers.

But come March 31, if you don’t have the cash handy, you can just swipe your Q-card.

This is not the first time Metro tries to get rid of their dozens of fare cards.

Back in 2002, Metro hired a San Diego company to develop a smart card.

Well, that went sour and Metro sued the company for not delivering on their promise.

But, Metro says the new Q-card has been tested and will work.

“We didn't want to start using the system until we felt it was ready,” said Raequel Roberts, Metro’s director of communications. “And we feel that we have reached that point now. So, we plan to go forward with it.”

Metro even plans to throw in a perk for riders who use the card; 5 free rides for every 50 fares.

“I can always take my granddaughter and my daughter to Little League events, or the zoo. It'll be nice,” said Bradford.

Metro expects ridership to drop by about five-percent as the new Q-card rolls out. However, it also expects those riders to return.
