Congress to investigate KBR rape claims
09:42 AM CST on Thursday, December 13, 2007
Houston-based Kellogg, Brown & Root might soon face new questions -- this time from Congress -- on the safety and security of the women who work for it in Iraq.
This development happened after Jamie Leigh Jones, a former KBR contractor, said she was brutally gang-raped by other contractors while working there.
“Now Congress is going to get involved in this in the public forum and find out what’s going on? What’s happening to these employees. Is their corporation involved in securing their safety or looking the other way?,” asked Rep. Ted Poe, Houston.
11News has learned the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing next Wednesday about the allegations.

KBR said it takes safety seriously and does not tolerate sexual harassment.
But Tuesday, 11News discovered four other federal lawsuits from other women who used to work for KBR, all making similar allegations.
“The hearings could do several things,” Poe added. “First of all find out how widespread these actions are. How many victims are there out there. What’s going on?! If nothing has happened to the perpetrators, why not?”
Contractors like Jones are already protected under U.S. law while working overseas.
The House just passed another bill, HR 2470, strengthening laws to better protect all contractors. The Senate is now considering that legislation.
Congressman Poe said it’s too early to know exactly who will be subpoenaed to testify next Wednesday.
Jamie Leigh Jones and other women who say they’re victims might tell their stories.
It is uncertain whether KBR will be called to answer questions itself.
