Major break in case of guns stolen from HPD
12:59 AM CST on Thursday, December 13, 2007
There is a major break in the case of the guns that went missing from the Houston Police Department’s property room .
In April, 11 News broke the story of how the Houston Police Department learned that guns, that were supposed to be secured under lock and key inside the property room, had disappeared.
Two of the missing 21 guns were later recovered in the hands of criminals. One was recovered during a routine traffic stop, while the other was found after a drug bust.
An internal investigation was launched immediately and two property room employees were placed on suspension.
Fast forward eight months, and we’ve learned that HPD has apparently had great success in this case.
The department's public information office told us that the internal affairs investigation is winding down and the official report is expected in just a few weeks.
11 News sources said the investigation focuses on two city contract workers, who are not affiliated with HPD. They had access to the property room because they were apparently working on the phone system.
One high-ranking HPD employee says one of the contract workers has already confessed.
At this time, it is unclear if any arrests have been made, or if the suspects have criminal records.
HPD now has a new administration running the property room. And right next door, the department has already broken ground on a new state-of-the-art facility to house all the evidence.
It will be equipped with dozens of surveillance cameras and security checkpoints.
