First fire, now asbestos keeping seniors from apartments
11:59 AM CST on Tuesday, December 4, 2007
The senior citizens who were forced out of their mid-rise by a fire are finally allowed back in their apartments Tuesday.
They were allowed to collect some of their belongings, but they’re not allowed to stay.
That’s because last week’s four alarm blaze uncovered another problem with the complex, asbestos.
As a result, residents are only allowed in the building for less than one hour to collect two boxes worth of things.
One resident said she only got to pick up her medicine and important documents. “And when I came back, I was not allowed to enter. Only one pair of clothes, no underwear, no toothbrush, nothing,” said Dr. Medhukente Trivedi who is a resident.
The Houston Housing Authority says the 240 residents won’t be allowed to move back for at least another six months while the asbestos is cleaned out.
