Deadly force case sparks heated debates
06:47 PM CST on Monday, December 3, 2007
In Pasadena, a weekend neighborhood protest got ugly quickly.
And just as quickly divided the group along racial lines.
But the fight over what Joe Horn said and did last month has gone far beyond Timberline Drive.
The whole thing started when Horn called 911 to say that two men, Miguel Dejesus, 38, and Diego Ortiz, 30, were breaking into his neighbor’s home.
In the 911 call, released to the media, the emergency operator can be heard urging Horn to remain in his home and wait for police to arrive.
But Horn reportedly did not comply and was heard saying he was going to kill the suspects.
After the shooting, a shaken Horn called 911 again.
While some disagree with Horn’s reported decision, others on the Internet see Joe Horn as a hero.
He’s being praised on worldwide Web sites as the neighbor of the year. There’s even a purported legal defense fund that comes with the address JoeHornForMyNeighber.com.
But Horn is also vilified on the Web as a murderer, as a racist and a cartoon character. Monday, through his attorney, Joe Horn said he is saddened by the effect on his neighbors and what this is doing to their lives.
And that if he had to do all over again, he would have never left his house with that gun to confront the two men.
But a line has already been drawn, not just down the middle of Timberline Drive, but among people across the country.
