Mayor White offers $10,000 reward in copper heists

Lee McGuire's report

It’s been a busy day for police outside Atherton Elementary.

On Wednesday morning, Principal Albert Lemons found an air conditioner, ripped apart. Another unit was also gone. “Well you have heartless people and when you don’t know God, what can I say?”

And it appears the same people pulled the copper out of four other units at the Hester House Community Center across the street.

Those units were heaters and air conditioners, so the seniors inside have no way of warming up.

“If they’re targeting Hester House and Atherton Elementary it has to be someone with familiarity in that area. We have to get into that community,” said Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson.

The Houston City Council has heard about a lot of copper thefts. But this one hit a nerve.

“There is somebody that has some information in the area,” said Houston Mayor Bill White.

The Mayor’s asking Crime Stoppers to put up a $10,000 reward leading to the conviction of whoever committed the crimes.

As for who will pay for the damages?

“If nobody else does I will,” said Mayor White. “I’m guaranteeing it. I’m personally guaranteeing it.”

“I wish I could find out who did this I wish I could take the 10,000 and give it to the children of this school,” said Lemons.

The school could use the money.

You see, replacing those air conditioners will cost several thousand dollars.
