Seeking justice for Baby Grace
05:40 PM CST on Monday, November 5, 2007
The father of a girl who was found murdered years ago is trying to help solve the mystery of Baby Grace’s death.
Deputies on Sunday placed a cross at the site on a small shell island in West Bay where the young girl’s body was found in a plastic container.
It bears the name Baby Grace, but detectives say they hope one day it will bear her real name.
They’ve received 170 tips and leads so far in the case – the farthest coming from Sweden.
And while they don’t yet know the child’s identity, they’re almost completely positive she isn’t Madeleine McCann, the little English girl missing from Portugal.
In a bid to keep the leads coming, Bob Smither created the Baby Grace Web site, a clearing house for information, tips and updates.
Smither did it to help bring the girl’s killer to justice – an ending his own daughter, Laura, never got.
Detectives say the leads pouring in have been overwhelming – not so much in volume, but in emotion.

“You know, there’s people out there that care and maybe me being the cynical old cop, maybe there’s a little humanity out there and that gives us a positive outlook.”
That positive outlook keeps them going, pursuing every tip they get.
Police in New York have even asked them to look into a missing child case there.
Detectives say the best way to help is to keep the information coming in the hopes that the smallest lead might reveal who Baby Grace really is.
