Metro: Rail construction will be different
02:18 PM CDT on Friday, October 19, 2007
A day after assurances from Metro that light rail construction will be much easier to digest this time, some Houstonians are still bracing for the worst.
Why Metro thinks it will be different, and hear from someone who doubts it
Some homeowners along Wheeler Avenue in southeast, which runs right along the system’s controversial University line, believe light rail construction will be a nightmare.
“I think it’s going to create a lot of congestion, and we’re not used to that." said Lillie Johnson, who’s lived on Wheeler all her life.
A Metro representative insists the agency has learned from past mistakes and has a new plan for constructing light rail that won’t be nearly so intrusive.
For instance, instead of tearing up several miles of roadway at a time, like they did on the Main Street line, work will be limited to half-mile segments, making the overall project easier to digest.
