TSU students may need rabies shots

Raw video: Student video of bat invasion.

Leigh Frillici reports from the TSU campus.

More than 200 Texas Southern University students were forced to move from their dorms Monday and into local motels after a bat infestation at one of the campus dorms. Now, the city health department says that all of the students may have to be subjected to a series of rabies shots.

11 News was the first to report about the bat invasion last week. Residents of TSU’s Lanier Hall East were fighting off the bats with brooms and tennis rackets.

On Monday, the university began moving the students from the dorm to a pair of nearby motels. The city health department said because of the proximity to the bats, the 211 students who lived in Lanier Hall might have to undergo rabies shots as a protective measure.

A meeting between university officials and the health department is scheduled for Monday evening to discuss the medical concerns.
