Texas City soldier killed outside Baghdad

10:59 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 11, 2007

KHOU.com staff report

Sgt. Omar Mora was the father of a 5-year-old girl.

It is old and worn, but for months a yellow ribbon served as a sign of hope, that one day Sgt. Omar Mora would be home.

"He was coming home in November. He was coming home in November,” his mother Olga Capetillo said.

Mora, 28, died Monday. He was one of seven American troops killed near Baghdad in vehicle rollover accident.

It was his second tour of duty.

His parents said being a soldier was what he wanted to do.

"He don't think twice about going to Iraq to do his duty,” said Capetillo.

He graduated from La Marque High School, tried college and worked odds jobs until he decided to enlist.

His sister said his wife and 5-year-old daughter were his strength and motivation.

Sgt. Omar Mora was killed in an vehicle accident outside of Baghdad on Monday.

"I gonna tell Jordan her father was a really great man. He was a really great man. He loved everybody. He loved his family so much,” said Erica Capetillo, Omar’s sister.

His family said Sgt. Mora understood the risks.

Still, their grief is overwhelming, at times all consuming. But in Texas City, they are taking comfort from the outpouring of support from friends and family and especially a fellow church member and parent who knows all too well, what they're going through.

11 News was there when Jose Jaurigue stopped by to pay his condolences.

His son, Michael died in May. He was killed by a roadside bomb.

Two families now united in grief.

"Omar was a very proud person,” said his father Robert Capetillo. “To us he's our hero."

A hero who gave this country the only life he had.

The Army informed Mora’s parents of his death late Monday night. He is the third serviceman to be killed since May.

Sgt. Jeffrey Kettle was killed in an ambush last month in Afghanistan while Michael Jaurigue was killed by a roadside bomb while on patrol in Iraq in May.

Mora, 28, leaves behind a wife and 5-year-old daughter.
