HPD: Northwest side's crime drop due to task force

The Houston Police Department on Thursday called their gang crackdown a success.

They credit the cooperation of 60 police officers from a number of agencies, including federal, Precinct 1 constables, METRO, Houston and Aldine ISDs.

Collectively they targeted drugs, prostitution and gangs in northwest Houston.

Just a few weeks ago the last residents moved out of the Candlelight Trails condos. Now the condemned property is empty, and many hope it will be torn down soon.

But members of an anti-gang initiative said crime has dropped dramatically since the condos were shut down.

"I'm pleased to report the total crime for the four-week period we were here went down 11 percent," HPD Assistant Chief Dan Perales said.

Ironically, while task force members talked about their success, deputy constables made an arrest across the street.

"We will not go away," said Roy Millmore with the Near Northwest Management District. "We have a committment from every agency to continue this participation."

They said the cooperation between so many agencies is a first and that it may continue in other neighborhoods.
